History and Organization of the Parish
St. Brigid Parish was founded in March 1940 by Msgr. J. A. C. Van Veggel. The first church was dedicated in July of that year. In December 1948, the present church, which incorporated St. Brigid Academy, was dedicated by Bishop Charles Buddy. The original church was then used as an auditorium and meeting hall. When a new church hall was built in 1980, the original church was torn down. The north parking lot now occupies the site.
In 1997, the church was retrofitted for earthquake safety. In the process, braces were added to the roof, a new roof was installed and a new tile floor was laid beneath the altar and up the center aisle of the church. Side panels were refinished and arch lighting restored. The main and side altars were repositioned to increase the size and seating capacity of the side transepts.
This is an active parish, with many special-interest associations: young adults, married couples, Spanish-speaking groups, and four choirs. While the original school closed in 1971, education continues, beginning with pre-school and continuing through high school into adulthood.
The parish staff includes the Pastor, Msgr. Steve Callahan; Pastoral Assistant, Sr. Josephine Breen; Director of CCD, Sr. Hilda McDonagh; and Director of Music Ministry, Jensine Nolan. For information on any of the above organizations and ministries, consult a Bulletin, available in racks at all exits. To register in the parish, please call at the parish office. Membership in the parish is required for baptisms, marriages, etc.
